I am often asked a lot of questions about being vegan; Did you do this for health reasons, or…? What do you do about protein? Do you have to take vitamins?  The list goes on.  The most often asked question and probably the one that I love answering the most is “What made you choose to go vegan and how did you do it?”  If you are just starting out or pondering the idea, you may find this information useful.  So here goes…

My boyfriend and I had begun to listen to our bodies; what we were eating was making us feel bad.  We noticed that when we ate an avocado or just a salad, that we felt so good and energized; whereas when we ate something heavy with meat and butter, etc. that we felt
weighed down and puffy.  Despite beginning to listen to our bodies, we were nowhere near coming to the conclusion that we should be vegan.  Someone at work mentioned the movie “Forks Over Knives”   and I was intrigued by the idea that the movie spoke a lot about the science of food and the human body.

Thomas and I watched the movie.  The impact on our lives was instantaneous.  I will not aspire to reiterate the messages of the movie in detail here (you need to watch it!), but what I will say is that the movie supported things that we had thought about and things that we just knew, somehow.  The predominant messages that spoke to us were:

  • The challenges the human body has with digesting and incorporated animal products.
  • Milk products are not intended for human consumption (milk is for calves).
  • The natural hormones of the food animals in addition to those that are injected in commercial farming are absorbed into our bodies when we consume them.

Believe me, there was much more content to the movie, such as calcium deficiencies associated with consumption of animal proteins, weight gain associated with consumption of milk products, addiction to milk and animal proteins, and a whole lot more.  It all explained a lot.  As I said, I won’t go into all of it, you need to watch the movie, but it answered a lot of our questions and it gave us a simple solution.

We agreed to cut out animal products from our diet for a week and see how we felt.  A week turned into a month within a couple of days and that turned into a lifetime within 2 weeks.

In my next posts, I will talk about how we approached eating, living, beauty products, and experiencing the full submersion into vegan-hood.
